The social app is no longer available to American users, but the former president promises action to resolve the issue

TikTok has stopped working in the US following the enactment of the ‘Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act’, signed by Joe Biden last April. American users, some 170 million, now display a message explaining the situation:

‘Sorry, TikTok is not available at this time. A ban law has gone into effect in the United States. Unfortunately this means you cannot use TikTok for the time being. Fortunately, President Trump has said he will work with us on a solution as soon as he takes office. Keep following us.’

Law and consequences

The legislation, designed to protect US user data from potential foreign interference, requires China’s ByteDance to divest TikTok’s US services to a non-Chinese company. The validity of the law was upheld by the Supreme Court last Friday.

In line with this measure, the app was removed from Apple and Google Stores in the US, preventing new downloads.

Trump’s role

Donald Trump, who will officially return to the presidency on Monday, has promised to deal with the dossier left open by Biden. In 2020 he had expressed his intention to ban TikTok, but during the recent election campaign he used the platform, even creating his own account.

Trump has stated that he wants to ‘save TikTok’ and could extend the deadline for enforcement by 90 days in an attempt to find a solution that allows the platform to survive in the US.
