PM avoids addressing responsibility for attack Israel suffered and confirms new large-scale military offensive against Hamas
Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu chose once again to postpone the establishment of a state commission of enquiry into the 7 October attack, the most serious suffered by Israel in decades. ‘We have to do it, but at the end of the war,’ he said in a video released by his press office, pointing out that a “political examination starting with the prime minister and staff” would be necessary, but only when the military operations are over.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu announced a massive new offensive in the Gaza Strip, planned with the General Staff for ‘the defeat of Hamas and the release of hostages’. The PM spoke of ‘intense action’ and the need to move part of the Palestinian civilian population ‘to protect them’.
The postponement of the investigation continues to draw criticism even within Israel, where pressure is growing to ascertain how it was possible for the 7 October attack to take place without any warning or effective reaction from the intelligence and army.
