Trump proposes summit with Putin and Zelensky after meeting in Alaska
The Anchorage summit excludes European leaders, who are calling for a ceasefire and security guarantees for Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Russian offensive advances in the east
Donald Trump has announced his intention to organise a three-way summit with Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky after the bilateral meeting with the Russian leader scheduled in Anchorage, Alaska. The US president warned that Moscow will face “very serious consequences” if it does not agree to stop the war. The statement came after a “very good” phone call with several European leaders, including Zelensky.
Mediation under scrutiny
Trump explained that a possible trilateral meeting would take place “almost immediately” after the summit with Putin, but did not provide specific dates. The initiative is part of his attempt to keep his election promise to quickly end the conflict, but the exclusion of Kiev and European capitals from the summit in Alaska fuels fears of concessions on the future territorial structure of Ukraine.
The demands of Kiev and Europe
Zelensky, connected by videoconference from Berlin to a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, other EU and NATO leaders, and Trump himself with Vice President J.D. Vance, reiterated: ‘Putin does not want peace, he is bluffing.’ Emmanuel Macron made it clear that ‘territorial issues will only be negotiated by the Ukrainian president’ and that the priority is to achieve a ceasefire.
Unified Western position
Britain, France and Germany, co-chairs of the “coalition of the willing”, reaffirmed that international borders must not be changed by force and that Ukraine must receive “solid and credible” security guarantees. They also threatened new sanctions against Russia if no agreement is reached in Alaska.
Strategy and conditions for negotiations
In Berlin, Merz called for a 30-day ceasefire followed by substantive talks, stressing that negotiations must be part of a common transatlantic strategy based on military support and diplomatic pressure on Moscow.
The situation on the ground
Despite diplomatic efforts, the Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine has made significant progress in a strategic area of the front. The head of the Donetsk region has ordered the evacuation of civilians with children from the most exposed areas.
