Following the appointment of Sébastien Lecornu as Prime Minister, LR and PS divided over support for the new government

In France, reactions to President Emmanuel Macron’s reappointment of Sébastien Lecornu as Prime Minister are mixed, with political divisions and conditions set by the parties. Lecornu resigned a few days ago and has been tasked with forming a new government.

Bruno Retailleau, leader of Les Républicains (LR), has declared his opposition to participating in a possible Lecornu government, calling it “the final act of the dissolution of Macronism” and predicting that the new executive will be short-lived. However, the majority of LR MPs said they were in favour of supporting the government, as emerged from a videoconference held by group leader Laurent Wauquiez, with 38 votes in favour out of 41. Wauquiez, although personally opposed to participation, will follow the line of the parliamentary group majority.

The Socialist Party (PS), whose votes will be decisive for the survival of the new government, has announced that it will not grant Lecornu its confidence without ‘an immediate and complete suspension of the pension reform’. PS Secretary General Pierre Jouvet stressed that the party will censure the Prime Minister if the general policy statement does not confirm the abandonment of 49-3 and measures to protect citizens’ purchasing power.

The political situation in France therefore remains complex, with Les Républicains divided between support and participation, and the Socialist Party setting strict conditions, making the future of the Lecornu government uncertain.
