Priority given to the safety of civilians and the protection of minorities, while the government suspends asylum applications from Syria
At the end of the Council of Ministers, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni chaired a summit at Palazzo Chigi to discuss the development of the situation in Syria. The meeting confirmed the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring a peaceful and inclusive transition, with a focus on the safety of Italian citizens and minorities, including Christians.
Suspension of asylum applications from Syria
During the meeting, the government decided to suspend procedures for asylum applications from Syria, following the example of other European partners. However, the Italian diplomatic presence in Damascus was confirmed, with thanks to the embassy staff for their commitment.
International collaboration and continuous monitoring
The Italian government will closely monitor developments in the Syrian crisis, maintaining close contact with regional, European and G7 partners. The summit was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani, Ministers Matteo Piantedosi and Guido Crosetto, Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, and the heads of the secret services.
