The Australian wins the Saudi Arabian GP and becomes World Championship leader. Verstappen penalised but still second, Leclerc in a comeback leads the ferrari to its first podium of the season
Oscar Piastri takes victory in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, the fifth round of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, held today at the Jeddah circuit. The McLaren driver signs his third win of the season and rises to five in his career, ahead of the Red Bull of Max Verstappen and the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc, who gets his first podium of the season.
The young Australian also took the World Championship lead thanks to a perfect race. At the start, he forced Verstappen into a mistake: the Dutchman, who had started from pole, was forced to go wide and cut across the track to defend his position, but was punished with a 5-second penalty. After the pit stop, Piastri took the lead and did not relinquish it until the chequered flag.
Leclerc’s performance was excellent, struggling in the first part but leading in the final with a remarkable pace on hard tyres. The Monegasque overtook Russell decisively and kept behind Norris, fourth with the other McLaren. Kimi Antonelli’s race was also solid, sixth with the Mercedes behind his team mate Russell, while Lewis Hamilton finished seventh without managing to make up any ground.
With today’s success, Piastri now leads the drivers’ classification. Next appointment in a fortnight, on 4 May, with the Miami Grand Prix in the United States.
