According to Nbcnews, the US may halve the contingent it has sent after the Russian invasion. The move would be linked to Trump’s attempts to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine

The Pentagon is reportedly seriously considering the withdrawal of around 10,000 US troops currently deployed in Eastern European countries. This was revealed by Nbcnews, which cites six different sources in American and European circles. The troops in question are part of the 22,000-strong contingent sent by the Biden administration in 2022 to the NATO countries bordering Ukraine, immediately after the start of the Russian invasion.

Discussions ongoing, but proposal alarms allies

According to reports, the numbers are still being discussed, but the assumed reduction would correspond to about half of the additional forces deployed two years ago. The discussions focus in particular on the US military presence in Poland and Romania, two of the most exposed member states concerned about the Russian threat.

Trump seeks agreement with Moscow, but Europe fears abandonment

The news comes as Donald Trump, now leading the United States, is engaged in a diplomatic attempt to convince Vladimir Putin to accept a ceasefire in Ukraine. A move that, combined with the possible US military downsizing, fuels the fears of European allies: several sources have expressed concern that Washington is progressively reducing its commitment to ensuring the security of Eastern Europe.

A possible withdrawal, they observe from Brussels, could strengthen the Kremlin’s position and give the wrong signal about NATO cohesion at a time when the war in Ukraine is still far from over.
