Hamas today released two Israeli hostages, Ofer Calderon, 54, and Yarden Bibas, 35, as part of a prisoner exchange with Israel. The third hostage, Keith Siegel, 65, is still waiting to be released, with a stage already set up by the militiamen in Gaza harbour.

The first to be handed over to the Red Cross was Calderon, who was then transferred into the hands of the Israeli army (IDF) inside the Gaza Strip. Next was the turn of Bibas, whose release had a more choreographed staging: in Khan Younis, militiamen took him on a stage, handing him a document written in Hebrew before escorting him to the Red Cross convoy.

Both hostages, after arriving in Israeli territory and being reunited with their families at the Re’im military base, were transferred for medical treatment: Calderon and Bibas are now at the Sheba Medical Centre.

Meanwhile, in Gaza City, Hamas staged a ceremony for the release of Keith Siegel, a citizen with dual Israeli and US nationality. Images broadcast by Al Jazeera show an orderly crowd, including armed militiamen and Hamas and Palestinian flags, waiting for his release.

At the same time, the Israeli Prison Service is preparing to release 183 Palestinian prisoners, as per the exchange agreement.
