Senate narrowly approves former Fox News anchor’s nomination amid accusations and doubts over his suitability for the role

The US Senate has narrowly approved the nomination of Pete Hegseth as Pentagon chief. The former Fox News host, Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defence, got the green light thanks to Vice President JD Vance’s decisive vote, after a 50-50 tie.

The confirmation came despite allegations of alcohol abuse, sexual harassment and concerns raised about Hegseth, whose ability to lead the US military in a time of global crisis has been strongly questioned.

Political divisions and the international context

Three Republican senators joined Democrats in voting against the nomination, signalling divisions even within Trump’s own party. Hegseth’s confirmation comes at a time of great international tension, with the war in Ukraine still ongoing, instability in the Middle East despite recent ceasefires in Lebanon and Gaza, and an expansion of the military’s role in security at the US-Mexico border desired by the Trump administration.

Immediately after the confirmation, Trump celebrated the result on his Truth Social platform, declaring: ‘Congratulations to Pete Hegseth. He will be a great Secretary of Defence!’

A sensitive post amid controversy and expectation

Hegseth, known for his conservative views and television career, will now find himself managing US military operations in a complex global scenario. His appointment, however, raises questions about his ability to lead a critical institution like the Pentagon at a time when stability and military leadership are needed more than ever.
