Former FBI Director James Comey, who led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, faces up to five years in prison; the charges come after pressure from Donald Trump

Former FBI Director James Comey, who led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, has been indicted by a grand jury for obstructing a congressional investigation into the disclosure of sensitive information and for making false statements. According to the Department of Justice, the charges come after recent pressure from then-President Donald Trump, who had urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to take action against his political enemies.

James Comey, 64, appointed FBI director in 2013 by then-President Barack Obama, had led the investigation into possible links between Russia and members of Trump’s election team, who then fired him in 2017, leaving the investigation still ongoing.

Yesterday, the former director pleaded not guilty and expressed confidence in the American judicial system: ‘I am heartbroken for the Department of Justice, but I have great faith in the federal justice system and I am innocent, so let’s go to trial and keep the faith.’ Comey added: “Fear is the tool of a tyrant. I am not afraid, and I hope you are not either. Follow the developments closely and vote as if your country depended on it.”

Trump commented on the indictment with a post praising ‘justice in America!’ and calling Comey ‘one of the worst human beings the country has ever been exposed to.’ Attorney General Bondi said: ‘No one is above the law.’ If found guilty, Comey faces up to five years in prison.
