Italians side with Ukraine: strong disapproval for Trump after clash with Zelensky
White House episode between Trump and Zelensky sparks strong reaction on Italian social media, with the Ukrainian president seen as a hero and sharp criticism of U.S. policy
Rome – March 1, 2025 – Yesterday’s confrontation in the Oval Office of the White House between Donald Trump, president of the United States, and Volodymyr Zelensky, president of Ukraine, generated a wave of reaction on Italian social media. According to an analysis conducted by Vis Factor through its Human platform, the general sentiment in Italy is markedly pro-Ukraine, with strong criticism directed at Trump’s attitude during the meeting.
Discontent with Trump and the U.S.
The sentiment analysis shows a significant finding: 88 percent of the analyzed comments express a negative opinion toward Trump and the United States regarding the handling of the Ukrainian crisis. Users harshly criticized Trump’s aggressive and surly tone as he tried to downplay Zelensky, accusing him of a lack of gratitude for the support he received from America. This perceived arrogance has outraged many Italians, who see Trump’s attitude as a move to put Ukraine on the spot at a time of extreme vulnerability.
Comments such as “Zelensky is a hero” and “Trump shows his true colors” were repeated frequently, highlighting a feeling of sympathy for the Ukrainian leader and a growing distrust of American foreign policy.
The emotions behind the debate: sadness, anger and fear
The analysis also revealed the prevailing emotions that emerged from the online discussions. Sadness dominates with 50 percent of the feelings expressed, followed by anger (20 percent) and fear (10 percent). These emotions are linked to general anxiety about Ukraine’s future and international relations, with many users fearing an escalation of the diplomatic crisis between the United States, Ukraine and the European Union.
Zelensky, a symbol of hope and trust
On the other hand, Volodymyr Zelensky emerges as a positive figure in the Italian narrative, with 73 percent of comments expressing trust and support for him. Italians see Zelensky as a strong and courageous leader, fighting for the freedom of his people despite difficulties. Positive emotions, such as trust and hope, accompany the reactions of users, who hope for a change in the international diplomatic approach.
An uncertain future for international relations
Overall, the debate reflects a growing anxiety about U.S.-Ukraine relations, but also about the future of U.S.-EU relations. Many Italian commentators are calling for a reform of the diplomatic approach, fearing that Trump’s aggressiveness could jeopardize international stability and Europe’s security.
