IDF and Shin Bet confirm handover to Red Cross, health checks now underway

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet announced the release of seven hostages held in the Gaza Strip: two Israeli citizens and five Thais. The hostages were handed over to the Red Cross, which is now carrying out initial security checks before handing them over to the Israeli military.

After exiting Gaza, the freed men will be taken to a military base for a short stop and then transferred to Israeli hospitals for further medical checks.

The freed Israeli hostages are Arbel Yehoud and Gadi Mozes. Israel also officially confirmed the release of seven hostages by Hamas, including two Israelis and five Thais. The Thais had been kidnapped on 7 October 2023 while working as agricultural labourers. The names of the five Thai hostages are Thenna Pongsak, Sathian Suwannakham, Sriaoun Watchara, Seathao Bannawat and Rumnao Surasak.

Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu reacted harshly to the treatment of the hostages during their release, emphasising the cruelty of Hamas. In a statement, Netanyahu said: ‘I view with great gravity the shocking images during the release of our abductees. This is further proof of the unthinkable cruelty of the terrorist organisation Hamas. I demand that the mediators ensure that similar images are not repeated and guarantee the safety of the hostages. Anyone who dares to harm our abductees will have their punishment’.
