The North Korean leader reiterates the importance of nuclear weapons as a deterrent, while Seoul warns of Pyongyang’s growing potential
Kim Jong Un today stressed the importance of North Korea’s nuclear program as a “top priority” for national security. According to the leader, nuclear forces are the backbone of the deterrent necessary to ensure peace and protection for the country.
North Korea’s nuclear program, “the only deterrent” according to Kim
Speaking before experts and technicians, Kim said that North Korea must “constantly strengthen and modernize” its military capabilities, creating a “reliable nuclear shield” to defend its security, interests, and right to development.
Pyongyang’s statements come after South Korean President Lee Jae Myung sounded the alarm, pointing out that North Korea has enough nuclear weapons to ensure the survival of its regime. According to Lee, work on the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles is in its final stages and Pyongyang could increase its arsenal by 15-20 atomic bombs annually.
North Korea’s nuclear program: analysts disagree
Analysts note that North Korea’s nuclear program is a destabilizing factor in the region, especially in a context of growing tension between Pyongyang and Seoul, while the international community closely monitors the progress of North Korea’s missile and nuclear technology.
