Planning commission decision raises concerns for a potential Palestinian state
Israel’s Civil Administration High Planning Committee, a department of the Ministry of Defence, has approved the controversial E1 project in the West Bank, which envisages the construction of around 3,400 housing units between East Jerusalem and the settlement of Maale Adumim. The decision was confirmed by the Israeli organisation Peace Now, which had a representative present.
The project covers approximately 12 square kilometres, a strategically sensitive area. Experts warn that building here could effectively divide the West Bank, seriously undermining the possibility of establishing a Palestinian state on a contiguous territory.
Israel’s Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, a far-right figure, described the move as “historic”: “It is a significant step that effectively cancels the illusion of two states. The Palestinian state is being removed from the table not with slogans, but with facts. Every settlement, every neighbourhood, every housing unit is another nail in the coffin of this dangerous idea,” he told the Times of Israel.
