After the attack that claimed 26 lives, the Indian government accuses Pakistan of supporting terrorist groups and takes drastic measures, raising fears of a military escalation between two nuclear powers

Tensions between India and Pakistan have exploded after the terrorist attack in the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 people, including a Nepalese. India accused Pakistan of supporting the extremist groups responsible for the attack, in particular the Resistance Front, which claimed responsibility for the action.

In response, New Delhi has taken drastic diplomatic and strategic measures: the historic Indus River Waters Treaty, signed in 1960, has been suspended and Pakistani diplomats have been expelled, with a drastic cut in Indian presence in Islamabad. The main border crossing was also closed, and all Pakistani citizens in India were ordered to leave the country by 29 April.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised a strong response, speaking of ‘justice’ to be pursued wherever the perpetrators of the attack are. Islamabad denies any involvement and accuses India of ‘acts of war’, evoking the risk of a serious regional conflict.

The escalation is reminiscent of previous crises, such as the Balakot crisis of 2019, and increases international fears for the stability of the subcontinent.
