US president blocks funds to UNRWA and confirms decision during meeting with Netanyahu
Donald Trump signed an executive order in the Oval Office this afternoon marking the withdrawal of the United States from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), a decision he had anticipated during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. With the signing, Trump also confirmed the freezing of funding for the United Nations Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
This move comes after Trump had already expressed his disappointment with the work of the UN Council, which he accused of not adequately representing US interests. The executive order, which will be implemented immediately, is part of a series of measures the Trump administration has taken to reorient the country’s foreign policy, especially in relation to the situation in the Middle East and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The meeting with Netanyahu, which took place in the afternoon, also saw a focus on strengthening bilateral relations between the US and Israel.
