In a context marked by deep political and economic crises, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has appointed Nawaf Salam to form a new government. The news was made official by the Lebanese Presidency after parliamentary consultations, and Salam, currently President of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, will return home in the coming hours to formally accept the mandate.

The new prime minister in charge will have to deal with an extremely delicate situation for Lebanon, a country that has been struggling for years to recover from a severe economic crisis, chronic political instability and increasingly pronounced social tensions. Salam is still abroad, but is scheduled to return tomorrow, with the aim of starting talks to form an executive that can lead the country out of the current impasse.

For Lebanon, a country symbolically known as ‘the land of the cedars’, the formation of a stable and capable government is crucial in order to face the upcoming challenges and to resume dialogue with the international community, with a view to possible aid and reforms that could contribute to economic and social recovery.
