Khamenei rejects US nuclear proposal: ‘Contrary to Iran’s interests’
Iran’s supreme leader attacks Washington: ‘We are not waiting for America’s green light. No say on uranium enrichment’
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has harshly rejected the new proposal put forward by the United States for a nuclear agreement, calling it contrary to Iran’s national interests and incompatible with the principles of the 1979 Islamic revolution.
‘The American proposal is 100 per cent against the ideals of our revolution,’ Iran’s supreme leader said in a speech marking the 36th anniversary of the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, founder of the Islamic Republic.
According to Khamenei, Tehran does not need Washington’s consent for its strategic decisions: ‘Independence means not waiting for the green light from America or similar countries.’
Addressing the US authorities directly, Khamenei then firmly reiterated: ‘Why are you interfering in Iran’s decisions on uranium enrichment? You have no say in the matter.’
The statement comes at a time of growing tensions between Tehran and the West over Iran’s nuclear programme, as international negotiations continue in an attempt to avoid further escalation.
