A new survey finds broad public resistance to President Donald Trump’s expansionist agenda, with strong opposition across party lines to taking control of Greenland

Americans oppose US takeover of Greenland, despite President Donald Trump’s stated interest in expanding Washington’s control over the autonomous territory governed by Denmark. According to a new CNN poll, nearly three out of four Americans reject the idea of the United States assuming control of the island.

The survey shows that 75% of respondents are opposed to a US move on Greenland, while only 25% say they would support such an initiative. The findings underscore the significant gap between the president’s ambitions and public opinion, suggesting that Trump’s expansionist push faces strong resistance among voters.

Opposition cuts across political lines. Even among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, opinion is evenly split: 50% support the idea, while the other half oppose it. Resistance is far stronger among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, with 94% against the proposal, including 80% who say they are strongly opposed. Independents who do not align with either party also reject the idea by a wide margin, with roughly eight in ten saying they oppose a US takeover.

The poll also highlights broader unease with US expansionism at a time of heightened international tensions. Nearly six in ten Americans say Trump has gone too far in trying to expand American power abroad. Only about one-third believe his actions have been appropriate, while 55% say the president has already gone too far in using the US military to achieve his foreign policy goals. A growing share of respondents—57%, up from 53% last summer—say Trump’s foreign policy decisions during his current term have damaged America’s standing in the world.

Beyond Greenland, the survey reveals deep divisions over US military involvement in Venezuela. A slim majority, 52%, opposes military action there, while 48% support it. CNN notes widespread concern about the stability of Venezuela’s government and fears that US forces could become involved for an extended period. Opposition grows further when respondents are asked about Washington exerting control over Venezuela’s government after the removal of Nicolás Maduro, with 58% against such a move.

Confidence in long-term outcomes is low. Most respondents doubt that US action would lead to a stable Venezuelan government within a year, and about two-thirds believe a prolonged deployment of US troops would be likely. Partisan divides are stark: 80% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents oppose the initial military action, while 80% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents support it. However, Democrats express stronger and more unified opposition to broader efforts to control Venezuela’s government.

The poll also suggests skepticism toward the motivations behind US intervention. Many Americans believe access to Venezuelan oil and a display of US military strength were key factors driving the decision, while fewer accept official justifications such as prosecuting Maduro in the United States or curbing drug trafficking. Only 26% of respondents believe improving the lives of Venezuelans was a primary factor.

Taken together, the findings reinforce a clear message from the public: Americans oppose US takeover of Greenland and remain wary of an expansive foreign policy that relies heavily on military power.
