The Venezuelan opposition leader symbolically presented Donald Trump with the Nobel Peace Prize medal. The gesture divides opinion and sparks irony on social media

Trump and the Nobel Peace Prize are back at the centre of political and media debate after the symbolic gesture made by Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. During a meeting in the United States, Machado presented the American president with the Nobel Peace Prize medal, explaining that it was a purely symbolic and informal act.

Interviewed by Fox News, Machado clarified that the Nobel Prize is not transferable, but described the moment as “very emotional”. The Venezuelan leader said she presented the medal “on behalf of the people of Venezuela”, emphasising her gratitude for the opportunity to speak with Donald Trump and claiming the gesture as a political responsibility.

According to Machado, Trump has demonstrated a concrete commitment not only to the freedom of Venezuelans, but to the entire Western hemisphere. This recognition, in her view, goes beyond the material value of the prize and is political and symbolic in nature.

Trump commented on the meeting on his social media profiles, thanking Machado and speaking of a gesture of mutual respect. The president reiterated, once again, that he considers himself deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize, an award he has repeatedly claimed over the years, arguing that he has contributed to the end of several international conflicts.

The issue of Trump and the Nobel Peace Prize is not new. In the past, White House officials have openly expressed their dissatisfaction with the failure to award the prize, accusing the Nobel Committee of making political choices. The committee’s chairman, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, has always rejected the criticism, reiterating that decisions are based solely on the wishes expressed by Alfred Nobel.

Meanwhile, while Trump proudly welcomed Machado’s gesture, the reaction on the web was immediate. Memes and ironic comments multiplied on social media, questioning the symbolic value of the medal’s award. Some users compared the episode to prizes “offered as souvenirs”, while others joked about future imaginary awards.

The entertainment world also weighed in. On his show, presenter Jimmy Kimmel joked about the episode by showing his own television awards and ironically offering the president the chance to choose one, turning the story into a new arena for political and satirical confrontation.
