Bilateral at Palazzo Chigi marks renewed cooperation between Italy and France

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and French President Emmanuel Macron met in Rome for a four-hour summit aimed at revitalizing political dialogue between the two countries. The meeting, held at Palazzo Chigi and followed by a working dinner, signaled a step forward in easing recent tensions between Rome and Paris.

The French presidency described Italy as a “key partner” with a central role in shaping European policy, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine. According to the Élysée, the goal of the meeting was to ensure the two countries can move forward together on the “essentials” of the European agenda.

The talks focused on strategic issues including economic competitiveness, common defense initiatives, the strengthening of transatlantic relations, and joint efforts to curb irregular migration. Both leaders expressed the shared ambition of building a more sovereign, resilient and prosperous European Union.

In view of upcoming negotiations on the EU’s next multiannual financial framework, Meloni and Macron also discussed how to secure funding for new strategic priorities. A hybrid approach involving both private investments and shared European resources is being considered.

The summit came just after the latest round of Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul, providing an opportunity to coordinate positions and reaffirm unwavering Italian and French support for Ukraine. The leaders underscored the need for a just and lasting resolution to the conflict.

Also on the agenda were the escalating crisis in the Middle East, the situation in Libya, and joint efforts to promote stability and security across the broader Mediterranean region.
