Ursula von der Leyen: ‘Europe must invest in common defence to tackle global threats

During a speech at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed the urgency of a European Defence Union, urging a decisive investment in security to counter global threats, in particular Russian expansionism. Quoting Alcide De Gasperi, von der Leyen reiterated the importance of a common defence, not to threaten, but to ‘deter any attack’ from outside Europe.

Von der Leyen criticised Europe’s approach in recent decades, describing the perceived ‘peace dividend’ as an ‘illusion’, pointing out that Europe was simply ‘managing a security deficit’. She emphasised the importance of the ReArmEu plan to fill the gaps in military supplies to Ukraine, but also noted that the security of the entire continent was at risk, with Russia continuing to pose an increasing threat.

In response to these challenges, she urged Europe to strengthen its industrial and military capacity, arguing that this plan will also have a positive impact on the European economy, creating new jobs and stimulating investment in various sectors. Ms von der Leyen concluded with an appeal to the need for common defence, stating that Europe must tackle this crisis head-on to ensure peace and security on the continent.
