The 19-year-old Russian conscript soldier, Artem Antonov, was shot dead by his commander after refusing to sign a contract to fight in Ukraine’s Kursk region. The murder took place on 21 October in the ‘Ilyinsky’ training camp. According to reports by the independent Russian blog IStories and the Kyiv Independent,
Antonov had been subjected to torture and abuse, and shortly before his death had denounced the violence in a private group on social media. His family discovered signs of further abuse on his body. The abuse of Russian soldiers, often related to hazing, is a problem with roots in the Soviet era.
