According to the Washington Post, the US president wants to increase pressure on Putin

Trump-Kiev, 25 September 2025 – Donald Trump’s apparent change of position, in which he spoke of a possible recapture by Ukraine of territories occupied by Russia, is actually a negotiating move. This was revealed by a White House source quoted by the Washington Post, describing the president’s words as a way to ‘put pressure on the Kremlin’ after the disappointing results of the recent summit in Alaska with Vladimir Putin.

‘Trump frustrated with Putin’

‘Everything the president does should be read in terms of ‘what can I do to reach an agreement’,“ explains the senior official, adding that Trump has been ‘very angry with Putin for some time” and wants to send “strong messages”. Despite Russia’s size and war economy, Ukraine “has been able to defend itself for almost four years”, the same source noted.

Trump-Kiev: words after the meeting with Zelensky

After a meeting at the UN headquarters with Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday, the US president said that Kiev can ‘regain all of Ukraine in its original form’ with adequate support, a statement that surprised many observers, given that in the past he had suggested ceding territory to end the conflict.

The official line remains one of negotiation

A few hours later, however, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated to the Security Council that the war will end “at the negotiating table, not on the battlefield”, confirming the official US position.

Political effect in Washington and Kiev

According to Ukrainian sources, even without concrete steps, Trump’s words strengthen Republicans who favour Kiev, allowing them to push for new sanctions against Moscow without fear of contradicting the president. ‘This communication provides a solid basis for talking about the Russian economy, the military situation and sanctions,’ said a source in Kiev.

Trump-Kiev: ukrainian offensive in preparation

Finally, The Wall Street Journal reveals that Ukraine is preparing a new offensive, for which US support would be decisive. Trump was reportedly informed of these plans during an intelligence briefing that also highlighted Russia’s limited military progress in recent years.
