White House: ‘Tired and frustrated’. Vance: ‘If Moscow doesn’t negotiate, the US will step back’

Donald Trump is ‘tired and frustrated’ about the situation in Ukraine and intends to check Russia’s real willingness to dialogue. This was stated by White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, just hours before a decisive double phone call the US president is scheduled to have with Vladimir Putin and, later, with Volodymyr Zelensky.

Vice President JD Vance, speaking to reporters before leaving Rome, anticipated the tone of the president’s speech: ‘Trump will ask Putin if he is serious. If Russia is not willing to dialogue, then we will have to say that this is not our war’.

Vance reiterated that the US, under Trump’s leadership, intends to do everything possible to facilitate an end to the conflict, but he also drew a red line: ‘We were right to try, but we will not continue indefinitely if there are no concrete signs’.

According to Vance, the Russian president ‘does not know exactly how to get out of this war’, having converted the national economy to military production. ‘It’s a profound transformation,’ he explained, ‘with civilian facilities now devoted to drones, ammunition and artillery.’

The vice president also pointed out that the conflict, now in its third year, is also dragging on because of the deep distrust between Moscow and the West. ‘Trump thinks this distrust is stupid, but will is needed on both sides. It takes two to tango’.

Finally, Vance also highlighted the economic aspect: ‘There would be many benefits from thawing relations between Russia and the rest of the world’.
