The Iranian cartoonist and illustrator, a naturalised French citizen, has turned down France’s highest honour, criticising Paris’s policies regarding Iran and its handling of visas for Iranian dissidents

Marjane Satrapi decided to refuse the Legion d’Honneur, the coveted French award, as a sign of protest against France’s hypocrisy towards Iran. In a letter addressed to the French Minister of Culture, the famous Persepolis author explained the reasons for her gesture, denouncing Paris’ policies that, according to her, do not respect the principles of justice and humanity towards Iran, a nation that has played a fundamental role in her identity formation.

The cartoonist highlighted the contradictions of the French government, which allows the children of Iranian oligarchs to stay in France, while hindering the entry of Iranian dissidents into the country. Satrapi emphasised that she does not want to disrespect the prestigious award, but believes that these discrepancies cannot go unnoticed. Originally from Iran, Satrapi has lived in France since 1994 and obtained French citizenship in 2006.
