After the plane crash in Muan that killed 179 people, South Korea will cooperate with the US to analyse data from the damaged black box. Investigation underway into the landing gear
South Korea has decided to send to the US one of the black boxes of the Boeing 737-800 that crashed three days ago near Muan, killing 179 of the 181 passengers on board. This was announced by the deputy minister in charge of aviation, Joo Jong-wan, during an official briefing.
Joo explained that since the information contained in the flight recorder was found to be unrecoverable on South Korean soil due to the damage it suffered, the decision was made to transport it to the United States to allow American investigators to cooperate in the analysis.
Meanwhile, South Korea has started inspections of all Boeing 737-800s operated by its airlines. The investigation is focusing ‘mainly’ on the landing gear, explained Yoo Kyeong-soo, director general of aviation safety policy. According to initial verifications, it appears that the landing gear of the crashed flight did not open properly, a detail that may have contributed to the disaster.
