Ongoing discussions in transition team: Florida governor could replace Fox News host initially chosen to lead Defence
Donald Trump may appoint Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as Secretary of Defence, replacing Pete Hegseth, the face of Fox News, who was previously nominated for the role. The news, reported by the Wall Street Journal, comes after allegations against Hegseth involving alleged misuse of funds, sexist behaviour and problematic alcohol consumption.
Hegseth’s situation
Hegseth, a war veteran and anchorman known for his conservative views, is accused of using funds intended for two veterans’ organisations he chaired for personal expenses and creating a hostile work environment. These accusations are compounded by allegations from NBC News that Hegseth often worked in an alcohol hangover and showed up drunk to professional events.
Some former Fox News colleagues, under condition of anonymity, stated that the former anchorman would also have excessive alcohol consumption during his tenure on ‘Fox & Friends Weekend’. However, no episode would have directly compromised his activities on television.
A spokesman for Trump’s transition team dismissed the allegations, calling them ‘defamatory falsehoods’. Fox News has not commented on the revelations.
DeSantis as an alternative
The name of DeSantis, Trump’s former rival in the 2024 Republican primary, has resurfaced among the options for the Pentagon. Sources close to the president-elect report that Trump has mentioned DeSantis in informal conversations, highlighting his early role in the list of candidates considered for Defence.
This choice could strengthen the leadership of the future administration, moving away from the controversies currently involving Hegseth. Discussions on a possible change of course, however, would still be in the early stages.
