Self-defence attack by US forces inside Syria
Weapons systems that threatened US and coalition forces destroyed. Syrian regime counter-offensive against HTS jihadists in Hama
The US Central Command (Centcom) announced it had destroyed ‘several weapons systems’ in Syria that posed a ‘clear and imminent threat’ to its own forces and those of the international coalition. The action, described as a ‘self-defence attack’, hit:
- Three truck-mounted multiple rocket launchers
- One T-64 tank
- An armoured troop transport vehicle
- Mortars used to attack US forces
Mission unchanged against Isis
Centcom made it clear that the mission in Syria remains focused on the lasting defeat of Isis and that the action is unrelated to recent developments in northwestern Syria. US forces continue to monitor the situation and maintain close contact with other regional forces.
Assad regime counter-offensive in Hama
In parallel, the Syrian army launched a counter-offensive against the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied factions in the Hama area in central Syria. Activists of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights report that the operation, which began after midnight with air support, pushed back the jihadists who had arrived at the gates of the strategically important city.
