UN: conference convened in 2025 for two-state solution in Palestine
From 2 to 4 June 2025, a roadmap to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be discussed in New York. Resolution calls for an immediate halt to violence and settlements in the occupied territories
The UN General Assembly passed a significant resolution paving the way for a high-level international conference to discuss a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The text, voted by a large majority of 157 countries in favour, eight against and seven abstentions, aims to relaunch the goal of a ‘comprehensive, just and lasting’ peace in the Middle East.
The 2025 conference
The resolution calls for the holding of a ‘High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Question and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution’. The event will be held in New York from 2 to 4 June 2025 and represents a crucial opportunity to develop a roadmap that could lead to the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel, ending decades of conflict.
The goal of the conference will be to adopt a final declaration outlining concrete steps towards a lasting peace based on mutual respect and coexistence between the two peoples.
Demands on Israel
In the document approved by the General Assembly, the UN calls on Israel to immediately cease all activities that impede peace, including:
– Violence, including military attacks and acts of terror.
– The destruction of infrastructure in the occupied Palestinian territories.
– Illegal settlement activities.
In addition, the resolution demands that all Israeli settlers evacuate the occupied areas, in line with international standards, and emphasises Israel’s obligation to comply with the International Court of Justice’s ruling as an occupying power.
A step towards peace?
The UN decision is an attempt to put international dialogue back on constructive ground at a time of escalating violence and deep political divisions. With this initiative, the international community reaffirms its commitment to a diplomatic solution and the right of both peoples to live in peace and security.
However, questions remain about the possibility of reaching a consensus between the parties, especially considering the political resistance and complexities on the ground. The success of the 2025 conference will depend not only on the will of the international actors, but above all on the ability of the Israeli and Palestinian leaderships to accept meaningful compromises.
