Frozen shrimp alert: John Kennedy warns Americans
Republican senator reports presence of caesium-137 in products imported from Indonesia
‘If you eat these prawns, you’ll become like Alien.’ With this provocative analogy, Republican Senator John Kennedy sounded the alarm about the importation of frozen prawns that are dangerous for consumption in the United States. During a speech, Kennedy showed a still from the film Alien to highlight the risks associated with the product.
According to the Louisiana senator, raw frozen prawns from Indonesia sold in several southern states may contain the radioactive isotope caesium-137. ‘These products should be inspected because other countries do not follow our protocols. But checks at the US border only cover 1-2% of the product, which is too little,’ Kennedy added, reiterating the seriousness of the risk to consumer health.
At the end of August, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) detected the presence of the incriminated prawns on the US market, thus opening the debate on the safety of imported food and customs controls.
