Gaza, Smotrich: ‘A real estate gold mine’, hostage release secondary
Israeli Finance Minister announces negotiations with the US on commercial reconstruction of the enclave
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich outlined the future of the Gaza Strip at the Urban Renewal Summit conference in Tel Aviv, sparking controversy with his profit-focused language. ‘At the end of the war, Gaza will be a real estate gold mine,’ he said, explaining that ‘negotiations with the Americans have begun’ to decide how to divide the enclave and ensure that the reconstruction ‘pays for itself’.
According to Smotrich, ‘we have invested a lot of money in this war. We have to see how we will distribute the land in percentages.’ The minister added that the demolition phase has already been completed and that ‘now we just have to build,’ while ‘the business plan’ for Gaza is on the desk of US President Donald Trump, who ‘is looking at how this situation will become a real estate windfall.’
His statements reveal that the release of hostages is not considered a priority: for the minister, the main objective is to take possession of Gaza and transform it into an economically profitable territory. The use of expressions such as “real estate gold mine” has attracted criticism because it shows an exclusively commercial view of reconstruction, far removed from the humanitarian and social conditions of the Palestinian population.
