Huge blaze in the Ferma area: flames fuelled by winds, hospitals on alert due to smoke

Fire emergency in Crete, Greece, where a huge blaze continues to ravage the south-eastern coast of the island. The flames, which broke out on Wednesday afternoon in a wooded area near Ferma, spread rapidly southwards due to strong storm winds, threatening hotels, accommodation facilities and private homes.

Around 1,500 people, including residents and tourists, have been evacuated from villages and coastal towns. Many have been transferred to the city of Ierapetra, where around 200 displaced people have found refuge in the sports hall.

According to emergency services, the fire covers more than six kilometres and continues to grow, making containment operations extremely difficult. Thick smoke envelops the area, drastically reducing visibility as far as Makry Gialos, more than 10 kilometres away from the main source of the fire.

The consequences are also serious in Agia Fotia, where several houses and rental properties have been destroyed. The entire area is without electricity and the main road has been closed to traffic for safety reasons. The police have urged the population to avoid non-essential travel due to poor air quality, extreme heat and ash rain covering the roads.

Health authorities report at least four elderly people hospitalised for respiratory problems related to smoke inhalation. As a precautionary measure, all hospitals on the island of Crete have been placed on alert.

The situation remains critical and is constantly evolving. Firefighters, assisted by aircraft and volunteers, are attempting to stop the advance of the fire.
