June 2025 is the hottest month ever recorded in Spain. The heatwave causes deaths across Europe, with exceptional temperature peaks also in Italy and France
The extreme heatwave sweeping across Europe continues to claim victims. In Spain, according to the state meteorological agency Aemet, June 2025 is the hottest month ever recorded in the country. Data from the Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) show at least 102 deaths since last Saturday alone. Overall, there were 380 heat-related deaths in June, with 30 June being the most dramatic day: 46 deaths in a single day, followed by 28 June, with 32 victims, the same number as in the whole of June 2024.
The situation is also serious in France, where the Ministry of Ecological Transition has confirmed that June was the second hottest month on record since 1900. The case of the 10-year-old American girl who died of a heart attack in the courtyard of the Palace of Versailles, where she was visiting with her family, is particularly tragic. Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher also reported two other heat-related deaths in the country.
In Italy, where temperatures are currently peaking, the heatwave has also caused numerous deaths. Yesterday, there were three new victims: a 75-year-old tourist and a 60-year-old man died in Sardinia, in Budoni and San Teodoro respectively, both struck down while at the beach. In Genoa, an 85-year-old man, who already suffered from other medical conditions, died of dehydration. On Tuesday, there were three other deaths linked to the heatwave.
According to weather forecasts, the extreme heat should begin to subside in the coming hours, but today there are still 18 Italian cities on red alert, and tomorrow that number will rise to 20, signalling a maximum alert level for public health, especially for the most vulnerable segments of the population.
Health authorities and meteorologists continue to monitor the situation as Europe faces one of the hottest summers in decades.
