Trump-Venezuela: US president admits authorising secret CIA operations
Trump authorises clandestine CIA operations in Venezuela
US President Donald Trump has stated that he authorised secret CIA operations against Venezuela, admitting that he also considered possible attacks on Venezuelan territory. During a press conference, Trump declined to elaborate on information published by the New York Times, according to which he had given the CIA the green light for clandestine action aimed at targeting President Nicolas Maduro.
‘I gave the authorisation for two reasons,’ Trump said, accusing Maduro of leading a ‘narco-terrorist regime’ and releasing prisoners to send them to the United States. When asked directly whether the authorisation included the possibility of neutralising the Venezuelan leader, Trump replied: ‘That’s a ridiculous question. Wouldn’t it be ridiculous for me to answer that?’
Trump-Venezuela: five boats hit at sea on suspicion of drug trafficking
In recent days, the US administration has already hit at least five boats suspected of drug trafficking off the coast of Venezuela, killing 27 people. Asked about the possibility of land attacks, Trump added: ‘I don’t want to tell you anything else, but we are also considering the land option, as we control the sea very well.’
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro immediately responded, denouncing the CIA’s alleged plans to destabilise Latin America. ‘No to regime change that reminds us of the failed wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya,’ he said during a meeting of the National Council for Sovereignty and Peace. “How long will the CIA’s coups continue? Peace is achieved and preserved,” Maduro concluded, speaking in Caracas.
