White smoke in the Vatican: new pope elected
At 6:05pm today, the white smoke officially announced the election of the new pope. From the chimney of the Sistine Chapel came the signal awaited by millions of faithful around the world and the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square, who now eagerly await to know the name of Pope Francis’ successor.
The white smoke arrived after the afternoon voting on the fourth day of the Conclave, followed with great attention by the faithful and the international media. With this symbolic gesture, the cardinals gathered at the Vatican announced that they had reached the necessary consensus for the election of the new pontiff.
As per tradition, the cardinal proto-deacon will shortly appear from the central Loggia of the Vatican Basilica to pronounce the famous Habemus Papam announcement, followed by the first blessing of the new pope Urbi et Orbi.
Updates will follow with the identity of the new pontiff and his first words as head of the Catholic Church.
The first hour news – After the morning’s black smoke, the cardinals returned to the Sistine Chapel for the afternoon’s two ballots. Live video coverage from St Peter’s
After the negative outcome of this morning’s two ballots, the Conclave has still not found the balance and the Catholic Church still remains without a new Pontiff. In the Sistine Chapel the cardinal electors cast their votes, but no name reached the required majority, and a black smoke rose from the chimney above the Sistine Chapel, visible from St. Peter’s Square.
The cardinals returned in the afternoon for the fourth and fifth vote, with a new possible outcome to be reported around 7pm, barring any surprises. In the event of new black smoke, today’s session will end without an election.
