Israeli air raids targeted the Palmyra military airport and the T-4 airbase in Syria. After the fall of Bashar al-Assad, Israel continues operations to prevent weapons from falling into hostile hands
Israeli air strikes have hit the military airport near Palmyra in central Syria, marking the latest in a series of raids carried out in the country since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime last December. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) confirmed the bombing, saying Israeli warplanes targeted the Palmyra military airport and the nearby T-4 airbase.
The SOHR, run by one person, has often been accused by analysts of the Syrian war of spreading inaccurate data and inflating casualty figures. However, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed the attacks, explaining that they targeted the ‘remaining strategic military capabilities’ at the two sites.
Since the collapse of the Assad regime, Israel has stepped up its operations in Syria, vowing to destroy weapons it fears may fall into the hands of hostile forces, including groups linked to Iran and other regional enemies, who may seek to use them against the Jewish state.
