US president Trump warns Netanyahu during UN talks with Arab leaders
Donald Trump has privately assured Arab leaders that he will not permit Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to annex the West Bank, Politico reports, citing six people briefed on the discussions held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
According to two of those sources, the US president was unequivocal, stressing that any attempt to extend Israeli sovereignty over the territory governed by the Palestinian Authority—not Hamas—would be blocked. Other insiders said Trump’s team presented a broader strategy aimed at ending the conflict, including proposals for security and administration once the fighting stops.
White House envoy Steve Witkoff, speaking at the Concordia Summit alongside the UN meeting, added that Washington is “confident and optimistic” a breakthrough could be announced within days.
The Palestinian Authority’s foreign ministry, meanwhile, condemned Israel’s closure of the Allenby crossing—the only passage between the West Bank and Jordan—as “a form of collective punishment”. It warned that sealing the crossing cuts off over three million Palestinians from the outside world, creating serious humanitarian and economic hardship and stranding thousands who need to work, study or receive medical care.
