Protests in Istanbul and Izmir after the arrest of Imamoglu, a leading opponent of President Erdogan. Pepper gas and rubber bullets used by police
Violent clashes took place today, Friday 21 March, in Istanbul between Turkish riot police and demonstrators protesting against the arrest two days ago of the city’s mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s main political challenger. Afp journalists and local media report that police used pepper gas on a massive scale and fired rubber bullets at protesters gathered in front of Istanbul’s city hall. In Izmir, opposition Halk TV reported, police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The protests also involved other areas of the city, with tensions occurring in several places, due to road and bridge closures put in place to prevent protesters from gathering in one place.
The leader of the Chp, Imamoglu’s party, Ozgur Ozel, spoke before the crowd gathered in front of Istanbul’s city hall, announcing that ‘we are 300,000’. The demonstrations spread to many other parts of the city, with thousands of people defying the security measures imposed by the authorities to express their dissent against the arrest of the mayor and Erdogan’s handling of the government.
