US Vice President JD Vance has openly criticised Denmark’s handling of Greenland, triggering a reaction from Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, who called for respect between allies

Denmark reacted strongly to recent criticism by US Vice President JD Vance during a controversial visit to Greenland. Vance, accompanied by his wife, accused Copenhagen of failing to protect Greenland and Western interests, paving the way for an increased US presence. The Danish Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, responded in a video posted on X, expressing the government’s disappointment with the tone used by Vance. ‘We do not appreciate the tone in which the criticism was made,’ said Rasmussen, recalling that the US and Denmark are close allies.

Vance’s statements come at a sensitive time for international security, with Greenland at the centre of attention due to its strategic value in the Arctic. During the meeting in Pituffik, Vance emphasised the importance of Greenland for world peace, arguing that the United States must act quickly to prevent powers such as Russia and China from taking control of the region.

US President Donald Trump reiterated the need for the US to annex it, citing international security reasons. ‘We need Greenland for world peace,’ Trump declared, hinting that the US would be ready to negotiate with Greenland in the event of independence from Denmark. However, the Danish reaction underlines how sensitive and tense the debate is between the allies.
