A few weeks before the deadline for the sale of the platform in the US, the presidency opens an official profile

The White House has opened an official account on TikTok, despite the uncertain future of the platform in the United States. The decision comes less than a month before the new deadline set for 17 September, when ByteDance, the Chinese giant that owns the app, will have to sell it to an American buyer to avoid a ban.

Trump: “America, we’re back”

In his first post, accompanied by a video of the president, Donald Trump said: “Every day I wake up determined to ensure a better life for people across the country. I am your voice”. The video was released with the caption “America, we’re back!”.

A geopolitical game

TikTok has 170 million users in the US and has long been at the centre of tensions between Washington and Beijing. The American fear is that, through national security laws, China could access personal data collected by the app. Since the tycoon’s return to the White House, the only halt to the platform has been a blackout of a few hours before the inauguration.

Signs of détente

According to CNN, the opening of the official White House profile is a sign that TikTok could remain active in the US. Within a few hours, the account had surpassed 20,000 followers, confirming the media impact of the presidential move.
