The US president intervenes with harsh words on the war in Ukraine, criticising both the Kremlin leader and the Ukrainian president
In a late-night post on Truth Social, US President Donald Trump launched a harsh attack on Vladimir Putin, denouncing the violence of the latest Russian raids in Ukraine. “I’ve always had a great relationship with Putin, but something happened to him. He has gone absolutely crazy!” he wrote, referring to the intense bombing raids on civilian targets. “He is needlessly killing many people, and I’m not just talking about soldiers. Missiles and drones are being fired on cities in Ukraine for no reason at all.”
Trump then reiterated his belief that Putin is aiming for complete control of Ukrainian territory: ‘I’ve always said he wants all of Ukraine, not just a part of it, and maybe he’s turning out to be right, but if he does, it will lead to the fall of Russia!’
The US president also attacked Volodymyr Zelensky, who in recent hours had criticised Washington’s silence in the face of Russian attacks, claiming that this ‘emboldens’ the Kremlin. “Zelensky is not doing his country any favours by speaking as he does. Anything that comes out of his mouth causes problems, I don’t like it, and he’d better stop,‘ Trump said, stressing that ’this war would never have started if I were president”.
‘This is Zelensky, Putin and Biden’s war,’ he added, “not Trump’s. I’m just trying to put out the big, bad fires that have been started out of gross incompetence and hatred.”
Interviewed by reporters in Morristown, New Jersey, before returning to Washington, Trump then hinted at the possibility of new sanctions against Moscow. “Absolutely, he’s killing a lot of people. I don’t know what’s gotten into him. What the hell happened to him?” he said. “I’ve known him for a long time, I’ve always gotten along with him, but now he’s sending rockets into cities and killing people. I don’t like him at all.”
‘I am very surprised,’ he concluded, “we will see what to do. I don’t like what Putin is doing…. something happened to this guy and I don’t like it.”
