Libya, ceasefire in Tripoli after clashes between rival militias
After two nights of violence in the capital, authorities announce truce to protect civilians and stop escalation. UN mission confirms support
A ceasefire was announced today in Tripoli after two nights of violent clashes between government-linked forces and the Rada militia, led by Abdelraouf Kara. This was announced by the Libyan Ministry of Defence, emphasising the desire to protect civilians, safeguard institutions and stop further escalation.
The truce comes after the death of Abdelghani al-Kikli, the powerful leader of a rival militia, and fighting that also involved residential areas of the capital. The provisional death toll is at least six.
According to the official statement, the regular forces, coordinated with the security authorities, are deploying neutral units at critical points to ensure public order. An appeal was also issued to all parties to respect the truce and refrain from provocations.
The UN Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomed the news, pointing out that the violence in densely populated neighbourhoods put the lives of countless civilians at risk. The UN had called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and urged the factions to resume dialogue.
Italy is also closely following developments. The Farnesina and the Embassy in Tripoli are in constant contact with the local authorities, while Minister Antonio Tajani is monitoring developments.
