Historic summit in Riyadh between US and Syria after 25 years. First meeting also with Erdogan and Mohammed bin Salman in video link-up
Historic meeting in Riyadh between US President Donald Trump and Ahmad al-Sharaa, leader of post-Assad Syria. It is the first summit between leaders of the two countries in 25 years, as confirmed by a White House official and reported by the New York Times.
The meeting was followed by a video meeting attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (Mbs) and al-Sharaa himself. This was reported by the Turkish Anadolu Agency.
During the Riyadh forum, Trump announced the lifting of sanctions against Syria: “I will order the lifting of sanctions to give them a chance for greatness,” he said.
Damascus welcomed the news. The Syrian Foreign Minister, Asaad al-Shaibani, called Trump’s decision “a fundamental turning point” for the country, stressing that it represents “a turning point for the Syrian people towards stability, self-sufficiency and true reconstruction after years of destructive war”.
