After the meeting in Muscat, the envoys of the US, Iran and Oman will meet again in the Italian capital. Meetings are also expected with Minister Tajani
The second round of the Iranian nuclear talks will be held in Rome on Saturday 19 April, following the first meeting on 12 April in Muscat, Oman. This was confirmed by sources informed about the dossier, quoted by Adnkronos. The Italian capital will be attended by Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s envoy, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Omani counterpart Badr Albusaidi, the latter acting as mediator in the indirect talks between Washington and Tehran.
Italian confirmation had already come two days ago from Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who had spoken of an official request from the delegations involved and the Sultanate of Oman. ‘We have given a positive response,’ he had declared, confirming what had been anticipated by the Axios website.
At first it seemed that the venue for the negotiations might change: on Monday evening, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry had in fact indicated Oman as the venue for the meeting, citing the simultaneous presence in Rome of US Vice President JD Vance as an obstacle. However, today the go-ahead would have arrived from Tehran to reinstate the Italian option.
At the meeting, Tajani is expected to hold separate talks with Witkoff, Araghchi and Albusaidi. Also scheduled is a phone call with Rafael Grossi, director general of the IAEA, who is currently visiting Tehran to discuss inspections and guarantees on Iranian nuclear activity.
Rome thus once again becomes the theatre of international diplomacy, at a crucial time for the future of the Iranian nuclear agreement and relations between Washington and Tehran.
