The U.S. president accuses Zelensky of dragging the U.S. into an unnecessary war with Russia, also criticizing Joe Biden’s administration and urging a diplomatic solution to the conflict

Donald Trump, currently serving as U.S. president from Jan. 20, 2025, has sharply attacked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, calling him “a poor comedian” who has become “a dictator without an election.” Trump’s frontal attack comes after a series of criticisms aimed at the Kiev leader at a press conference, to which he added new statements via a post on his Truth social network.

“Think about it, a moderately successful comedian, Volodymyr Zelensky convinced the United States of America to spend $350 billion on a war that could not be won and should never have started. Without U.S. intervention and without Trump, Zelensky will never be able to resolve this conflict,” the U.S. president wrote.

Trump also criticized the disparity in financial commitment between Europe and the United States, saying that “the United States has spent $200 billion more than Europe, and Europe’s money is guaranteed, while the United States will receive nothing.” He went on to accuse Joe Biden’s administration, calling him “the sleeper,” of mishandling the situation: “This war is much more important for Europe than for us. We have a great and wonderful ocean between us and this conflict.”

In his statements, Trump also accused Zelensky of not wanting to hold elections in Ukraine and of having low popularity in his country. “Zelensky admitted that half of the money we sent him has disappeared. He refuses to hold elections and does nothing to resolve the situation. A dictator with no elections, Zelensky had better move fast, or he won’t have a country left.”

In addition, Trump claimed progress in negotiations with Russia to end the war, stressing that only his administration is capable of reaching an agreement. “We are successfully negotiating the end of the war with Russia. Everyone admits that only Trump and the Trump administration can do it. Biden has never tried and Europe has failed to bring peace.”

Trump concluded his message by expressing a bitter criticism of the condition of Ukraine: “I love Ukraine, but Zelensky has done a terrible job. His country is in tatters and millions have died needlessly.”
