Greek prime minister introduces economic aid for businesses and employees on Santorini and neighbouring islands hit by unprecedented series of earthquakes
The Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, announced a series of extraordinary economic measures to support companies and workers on the islands of Santorini, Ios, Anafi and Amorgos, which were hit by a devastating earthquake sequence. Between 26 January and 9 February, these islands were hit by more than 14,000 tremors, a phenomenon that has not occurred in Greece with such intensity since 1964. Mitsotakis acknowledged the negative financial impact on local communities and stressed the importance of swift action to avoid further economic consequences.
Mitsotakis announced that all private companies in the affected areas will be able to suspend the employment contracts of their employees from 1 February to 3 March 2025. During this period, affected workers will receive an allowance of EUR 534, equivalent to 30 days of compensation. In addition, companies will have to maintain the number of employees post-suspension for an equivalent period, thus ensuring continuity of employment. These measures, the premier explains, are necessary to minimise economic damage and protect both companies and workers affected by the earthquake.
Due to continued seismic activity, schools in Santorini, Ios, Anafi and Amorgos, which have already been closed for a fortnight, will remain closed until 21 February, Mitsotakis confirmed. Most of Santorini’s approximately 16,000 residents and seasonal workers have already left the island for safety reasons. The evacuation and the prolonged closure of educational facilities are precautionary measures that, according to the government, aim to protect the population from the possible risk of new tremors or other seismic events.
