The former French president, wearing an electronic bracelet for his wiretapping conviction, announces an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights and retirement from the public stage

Nicolas Sarkozy has announced the suspension of all public activity as former president of the French Republic. The decision comes in the aftermath of the start of home detention with an electronic bracelet, a measure linked to his conviction in the so-called wiretapping case.

In a message posted on X, the former head of state reiterated that he considered himself a victim of injustice and said he had lodged an appeal with the European Court of Human Rights, which is due to rule on the case by the end of the month. ‘Out of respect for the functions I have exercised, I have decided to suspend my public activities and to renounce all media expression, with the exception of this personal message,’ Sarkozy wrote, specifying that he will continue his professional life instead.

The former president also ruled out wanting to be seen as a victim, while stating that the sense of injustice gives him an even greater determination to ‘fight relentlessly against lies, slander and manipulation’.
