Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro leaves hospital after three surgeries and returns to custody at the Federal Police headquarters after his request for house arrest is rejected
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was discharged from hospital yesterday after several days of observation following three surgeries. He was immediately transferred to the Federal Police headquarters in Brasilia to continue serving his 27-year prison sentence for attempted coup, after the Supreme Court rejected his request for house arrest.
Bolsonaro left the medical center in a convoy of military police and unmarked cars, which left the complex’s garage at 6:40 p.m. (10:40 p.m. Italian time). According to Agência Brasil, he was taken directly to the Federal Police headquarters, where he has been serving his sentence since last November.
The return to custody follows the decision by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who rejected the lawyers’ request to confirm humanitarian house arrest. The judge noted that Bolsonaro’s defense did not present “new facts that could overturn the reasons for the decision to reject the request for humanitarian house arrest issued on December 19, 2025.”
The former president, who underwent initial surgery for an inguinal hernia, has had further operations to block the right and left phrenic nerves, responsible for diaphragm movements, in order to stop a persistent hiccup that had been afflicting him for months. Medical staff will continue to monitor him, providing him with medication and food prepared by family members.
These procedures add to the long list of operations that Bolsonaro, 70, has undergone for abdominal problems, hernias, and intestinal obstructions, consequences of the stabbing he suffered in 2018 during the election campaign. The former president is serving a sentence of 27 years and three months in prison for the attempted coup between 2022 and 2023 against incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
