The drone development project was launched after the strategic partnership agreement between the two countries

North Korea has launched a programme for the production of attack drones, with Russia providing technical assistance for development and mass production. The agreement, which marks a new chapter in cooperation between the two countries, comes after the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty signed last year. According to sources cited by Japanese broadcaster NHK, Russia will help Pyongyang develop the drones, contributing to production that is expected to begin this year.

The treaty signed in 2024 has had further developments, with North Korean troops being sent to Russia to fight in conflict zones with Ukrainian forces, particularly in the Kursk region. The drone project is just one aspect of the growing military cooperation between the two countries, which is being strengthened with the aim of challenging Western powers in the context of the war in Ukraine.
